Agriculture Victoria Respond To Another Anthrax Outbreak in Swan Hill

Agriculture Victoria are currently responding to another outbreak of anthrax in the Swan Hill area, this time on a single property.

The current case is on a farm which has had a history of anthrax, and while at-risk stock on the property have been vaccinated, there are no confirmed numbers at this stage as to how many sheep or livestock have fallen victim to the most recent outbreak.

A media release from Agriculture Victoria this afternoon confirmed the property was under quarantine until proper carcass disposal and site disinfection were completed.

This instance marks the second time in under four months that Swan Hill has had a reported case of anthrax, and the third time since March last year.

Victorian Acting Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Cameron Bell in the statement said it shouldn't have an impact on surrounding areas.

"Quarantine controls will not affect the movement of local people or vehicles, including school bus routes," Dr Bell said.

"Local farmers, veterinarians and Agriculture Victoria are well prepared to handle these incidents. This isolated case was detected as part of ongoing surveillance for anthrax and other livestock diseases."

Agriculture Victoria are reminding locals that the disease is not contagious, with any risk being confined to people who handle dead livestock such as farmers, veterinarians and knackery workers.

Farmers are urged to report any cases of unexplained livestock deaths to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888; more information on anthrax cane be found at
