Berrigan's border anger

Berrigan Shire mayor Matthew Hannan has penned an open letter about the border

Berrigan Shire Mayor Matthew Hannan says new restrictions on border communities "are going to have devastating effects, mentally, socially and financially."

Hannan penned an open letter on August 6 about the impacts of border restrictions on cross border communities and those in the surrounding areas.

"Families will be destroyed and relationships broken, business will be in financial ruin," he wrote.

"The border community is again going to have to do the heavy lifting because of disagreement between the two state governments."

On Monday, Hannan said it was a situation affecting border communities along the river, not just in his own shire.

"All up and down, it's the same," he said.

"Whether it's Cobram-Barooga, Albury-Wodonga, Yarrawonga-Mulwala or Echuca-Moama, and even in the communities outside of those like Finley or Berrigan, we do live as one community.

"We rely on each other's business, accessing service across the river. And those like Finley who aren't actually on the river but rely on Victoria for their business, it's really tough on small business."
