Residents on Standby as Floodwaters Wreak Havoc in Birchip

Birchip has become one of the worst-hit locations Victoria-wide by yesterday's rain deluge, after more than 85mm caused widespread damage and flash flooding last night.

VicEmergency issued a warning for Birchip and Birchip West residents just after 11pm last night, advising locals to stay indoors and begin to consider their emergency plans after stating floodwaters were beginning to isolate homes.

A relief centre was established at the Birchip Leisure Centre to accommodate those whose houses were affected, while sandbags were also being distributed at the Birchip VICSES site on Cumming Street.

VicRoads have also issued warnings following multiple road closures; the Sunraysia Hwy at the southern entrance to Birchip, as well as Borung Hwy between Wooroonook and the Donald-Swan Hill Rd, were closed just prior to midnight.

VicRoads have advised motorists to seek alternate routes.

The Avoca River near Charlton is also threatening to become an issue, with the level (as of 3:45am) currently at 2.68 metres and steady.

VicEmergency have stated that it is likely to exceed the minor flood level (4.00 m) by late morning; the Avoca River at Quambatook is also currently rising beyond the 0.5 metre mark.

Yesterday evening saw dozens of calls for assistance were received for the region, including calls for rescue from a residence on Corack Road.

At this stage, it appears no one has been injured in the flooding following the rainfall, however the damage to property and possessions is set to climb as the extent of the flooding becomes apparent.

Residents in Kerang yesterday afternoon also sent in multiple calls to the SES, after the rainfall throughout Thursday managed to cause minor flash flooding damage while they were at work.

Mallee residents are being advised to keep up to date on the VicEmergency website, or via the app.
