Mallee's Police Forces Now Equipped with Body Cameras

The Mallee's police force are now even better equipped in their line of work, after body worn cameras were introduced to the region this morning.

More than 200 Police officers across the Swan Hill region, which encompasses all police stations from Swan Hill to as far south as Cohuna and Charlton, will be fitted out with the new technology as the statewide rollout continues on.

Highway patrol officers will also be fitted with the cameras.

The cameras will be used to record video and audio footage of policemen and women out and about, with officials saying the cameras will improve community safety, enhance evidence gathering and increase accountability among the officers.

Body Worn Camera Project Senior Sergeant Carl Woodley says the results from previous trials shows the Mallee's police officers will be impacted positively.

"Some of the results that we've had from our trial periods in Ballarat and Epping gave us some fantastic feedback," Senior Sergeant Woodley said.

"They felt as if they provided extra safety to them and the community; it promotes a safer working environment."

More than 11,000 cameras are expected to be deployed statewide by 2020.
