Murray River Swan Hill
Victorian & NSW firefighters battled a grass fire in Swan Hill allegedly sparked by New Years Eve fireworks.
The blaze on Goat Island, on the Murray River, near the Riverside Caravan Park, started around 10pm New Years Eve and burned out of control until the early hours of this morning.
It burned about 1.5 hectares.
CFA Operations Manager Robin McNally reported they haven’t ruled out the fires being started by the town’s official fireworks display.
“We’ve got reports that there was fireworks in the area but we’re not sure if it was illegal or the organised fireworks for the new year’s eve,” he said.
“That’s still to be investigated.”
