Local youth urged to take care of their mental health

Headspace Swan Hill is encouraging young people in the local community to take small steps for their mental health, as part of the fifth annual headspace Day.

The day is held as part of Mental Health Month which aims to support the mental health and wellbeing of all young Australians.

Research released by the organisation indicates currently, one in three young people (33%) report high or very high levels of psychological distress, and one in two young people (50%) were unable to carry out their daily activities on at least one day in the previous two weeks.

Headspace CEO, Jason Trethowan says it's a concerning trend in what has been a challenging year.

“That’s why we’re using headspace Day this year to encourage all young people to think about the small steps they can take – every day – to build in some strategies to support wellbeing,” says Mr Trethowan.

“It’s a crucial part of managing mental health – whether its 15 seconds or 5 minutes, make it a habit and create some time and space to focus on the everyday things that make you smile or simply slow down and breathe a little easier.”

Ian Johansen, headspace Swan Hill Manager says he hopeful that communities are able to bounce back.

"There are certainly some significant challenges that young people have experienced this year," says Johansen.

"While it is challenging, we can all work towards those small steps that will help us keep mentally fit."
