Mallee Irrigators Rewarded As Government Abolishes Levy for Region
Local irrigators in the Mallee will be set to save on average $200 per year, with the Andrews Labor Government abolishing the 50 cents per megaliter salinity levy.
The levy is set to be lifted on July 1, as part of the Water for Victoria framework introduced in 2016.
The Government has highlighted that irrigators within the Mallee have done their part since the induction of the levy in 1993 to adopt more efficient technologies, which in turn has helped reduce salinity and improve water irrigation management.
More than 200 properties across the region participated in the incentive program funded by the levy in the last 20 years.
The current framework will look to continue supporting salinity management in the Mallee, which includes the implementation of a salinity impact zoning system.
