The occupant was not harmed, with police unsure if the occupant was even aware the burglar was in the house; however the burglary is classified as 'aggravated' due to there being someone else present in the house at the time.
Police have been conducting interviews of neighbours in the area.
Swan Hill Senior Sergeant Station Commander Brad Bennett says it's another reminder to be diligent in keeping yourself as safe as possible.
"A lot of the time, people like this don't care if there's someone home or not; they'll still go in anyway... It just gives them easy access," Bennett said.
"We just need to have people look at their own safety; keep houses locked, keep cars locked, and hopefully we can keep these things from happening."
Anyone with any information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or the Swan Hill Police Station on 5036 1600.
